What are the Visual Arts

The visual arts include mediums such as drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, architecture, graphic art, photography, film, video art, and printmaking. Many of these pieces of art are created to stimulate us through a visual experience. When we look at them, they often provoke a feeling of some sort.

Starting Your Search

Be sure you understand what is expected from the paper or research project.  Read and re-read the assignment instructions and syllabus.  When in doubt, talk to your professor.  The more you understand what you need the easier the research process will be.

Finding a topic

  • Pick a topic that interests you

  • As topics catch your interest, read general information in reputable sources

  • Browse available research materials-- don't pick topics with no articles or books that cover the material

Starting Your Library Research

  • Search the library catalog for items related to your topic -- books work too!
  • Search the online databases for articles, books, and videos
  • Remember that you can use Interlibrary Loan

Featured Site: Film Literature Index

Through a NEH grant in 2002, Indiana University converted the print version of the Film Literature Index to electronic form. The FLI Online contains approximately 700,000 citations to articles, film reviews and book reviews published between 1976-2001.
