Basic Information Literacy: Start

It's not just a building...

This is our library building. However libraries today exist not only in physical form but in online catalogs, digital libraries, and databases filled with books, articles, images, videos, and objects.  These digital resources are amazing, but don't forget that you have physical people ready and happy to help you with any research question.

Feel free to stop by the desks on the main floor of the library!

Starting Your Search

Be sure you understand what is expected from the paper or research project.  Read and re-read the assignment instructions and syllabus.  When in doubt, talk to your professor.  The more you understand what you need the easier the research process will be.

Finding a topic

  • Pick a topic that interests you
  • As topics catch your interest, read general information in reputable sources
  • Browse available research materials-- don't pick topics with no articles or books that cover the material

Starting Your Library Research

  • Search the library catalog for items related to your topic -- books work too!
  • Search the online databases for articles, books, and videos
  • Remember that you can use Interlibrary Loan
